Cellulose partial ester preparation, for direct use in production of regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivatives, by heterogeneous reaction of alkali-swollen cellulose with dicarboxylic anhydride

Preparation of cellulose (CL) esters comprises reacting activated CL with dicarboxylic anhydrides (II) under heterogeneous conditions, including: (a) swelling CL in aqueous alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide, ammonia and/or amine; (b) pressing; (c) washing with a protic organic solvent; and (d) reacting with (II) in the melt or an inert organic carrier medium to give partially esterified CL (I). Preparation of cellulose (CL) esters (I) having a degree of substitution of 0.4 or more comprising reacting activated CL with dicarboxylic anhydrides (II) under heterogeneous conditions, is effected by: (a) swelling CL in aqueous alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide, ammonia and/or amine; (b) pressing; (c) washing with a protic organic solvent; and (d) reacting with (II) in the melt or an inert organic carrier medium to give partially esterified CL (I).
