<p>A method and system for transmitting acknowledgments (30) from an acknowledgment queue (40) in a receiving system (20) to a sending system (10) in response to receipt of a data packet (25) from the sending system (10) is disclosed. An acknowledgment compressor (45) co-located with an acknowledgment with an acknowledgment queue (40) of the receiving system (20) compresses a plurality of acknowledgments (55) within the acknowledgment queue (40) into a single acknowledgment packet (65). The single acknowledgment packet (65) is transmitted from the receiving system (20) to the sending system (10) over a packet data network (15) wherein it is intercepted at some point by an acknowledgment decompressor (50) prior to receipt by the sending system (10). The acknowledgment decompressor (50) regenerates the plurality of acknowledgments (55) from the single acknowledgment packet (65) and transmits the decompressed plurality of acknowledgments (55) to the sending system (10).</p> |
