PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of such a fault that the run out of control of a control means, etc., even when a power unit for electronic surveying instrument, such as the battery, etc., is removed during the operation of a surveying instrument. SOLUTION: A power unit for electric surveying instrument is provided with a battery pack 51 attachable to the main body 11 of an electronic surveying instrument and the main body 11 is provided with a battery pack attaching section having a power supply connector 27 and a light receiving element 29 and a CPU 31 which is operated by electric power supplied through the connector 27. The battery pack 51 is provided with a hook which is engaged with a hook formed in the battery pack attaching section, an attaching/detaching button 53 which cancels the engagement between both hooks when the button 53 is operated from the outside, and a switch 65 which is turned on when the button 53 is operated. The pack 51 is also provided with a light emitting element 59 which emits light when the switch 65 is turned on. When the button 53 is operated and the light receiving element 29 receives the light emitted from the light emitting element 59, the CPU 31 immediately stops from an operating state by executing operation terminating processing.
