PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a snow dam snowmelt apparatus being excellent in durability and waterproofness of a snow cover detecting device, advantageous in workability and maintenance, and capable of definitely detecting snow cover on roof without dispersion and certainly melting snow cover near the weir roof snowmelt construction heating the vicinity of the weir by installing the weir near the roof eaves of the roof having a gradient on a roof of snow dam. SOLUTION: A weir 3 is provided near the eaves portion 2 of a roof 1, a photo-electric sensor 5 is provided at a predetermined height of a rising portion 4 constituting the weir 3, LED light L of the photo-electric sensor 5 is directed to the ridge 6 direction almost in parallel to the slope of the roof 1, LED light L is projected to a side surface of snow cover 7 on the roof 1, and reflected light is received and the snow cover 7 is detected. Therefore, a set distance to a snow cover 7 to be detected is adjusted by the sensitivity adjustment of a photoelectric sensor 5 and, when the snow cover 7 is detected by the photo-electric sensor 5, the roofing material 8 is heated by a heating body 9 laid underneath the roofing material 8 near the weir 3 of the roof 1 for melting snow.
