PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a progress direction changing device for a band-like material, for detecting the contact between a tubular floater external surface and a band-like material being floatingly guided to avoid damage to the band-like material. SOLUTION: This changing device 1 for the progress direction of a band-like material has many gas nozzles 4 in the spiral band-like range in the opposite surface to a band-like material 2 forming the curved surface of a tubular floater 3. In this case, the device 1 is equipped with: insulated members 101 and 102 provided between the floater 3 and external devices 100 and 103 provided on the floater 3, a power source 105 for maintaining an electric potential difference between the floater 3 and the material 2, and a detecting means 104 for detecting a current caused between both the sides due to the contact between the floater 3 and the material 2. Also an automatic control means can be equipped to control the fluid supply quantity of a blowing fluid supply device 103, that is, the floating quantity of the material 2, based on a detected result by the means 104.
