PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain a high quality steel wire without generating the oxide and also, having no defect on the surface layer of the steel wire and to reduce a cost of the product needing the high accuracy and a managing cost with respect to a continuous quenching and tempering treating apparatus for steel wire composed of a heating furnace, quenching device and tempering furnace. SOLUTION: The quenching device 5 constituted by connecting a quenching part 6, heat exchanger 7 and blower 8 for forcible circulation with the piping 9 for gas circulation between the heating furnace 1 and the tempering furnace 2, is connected so as to make heating tubes 3, 4 arranged by penetrating the heating furnace 1 and the tempering furnace 2, respectively communicate with the quenching part 6. A gas storing tank 10 provided with a pressure adjusting means 11 is connected with a part of the quenching device 5 through the piping and new gas can always or periodically be supplied.
