PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actively supply the oil discharged from a relief port to the inside part of a timing chain meshed with a sprocket by providing a relief port for the oil discharged from a hydraulic control valve, so as to be located neat the inside part of the timing chain on the inside surface of a chain cover. SOLUTION: In this oil relief structure for an engine 2, a relief port 108 for the oil discharged from a hydraulic control valve 68 is provided, so as to located near the inside part of a timing chain 30 meshed with a crank timing sprocket 24 and intake and exhaust cam sprockets 26 and 28 on the inside surface of a chain cover 14. According to this, the oil discharged into a chain chamber 32 through the relief port 108 can be actively supplied toward the inside part of the timing chain 30 meshed with the crank timing sprocket 24 and the intake and exhaust cam sprockets 26 and 28, without being run down along the inside surface of the chain cover 14 or the block side surface of a cylinder block 4.
