PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the waste of a memory and to shorten the processing time by calculating area information showing an area including an image area by using stored minimum and maximum coordinate values of every row. SOLUTION: A CPU 2 finds the coordinate values of respective immediate values in a line direction by accumulating the number of repetition of image data and performs processing for storing a minimum X coordinate l-xmim in the line of the immediate value among the coordinate values of immediate values discriminated to satisfy prescribed conditions in an intra-line minimum X coordinate register 23 for every line and for storing an intra-line maximum X coordinate l-xmax of the immediate value in an intra-line maximum X coordinate register 24 for every line. While using these values, the CPU 2 performs effective area calculating processing. A minimum X coordinate a-xmin, a maximum X coordinate a-xmax, a minimum Y coordinate a-ymin and a maximum Y coordinate a-ymax expressing minimum and maximum coordinate values in X and Y directions of an effective area are set at the time of image operating processing and stored in minimum and maximum X coordinate registers 25 and 26 and minimum and maximum Y coordinate registers 27 and 28.
