PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration in performance caused by an excessive carrier in the recombination of a hole and an electron in a light emitting layer without impairing light emitting characteristics. SOLUTION: In an organic EL element having a light emitting layer 18 between an anode layer 12 and a cathode layer 24, and in which the flow rate of either one carrier of a hole and an electron flowing into the light emitting layer 18 is more than the other carrier, a carrier flow rate suppressing layer 16 for suppressing the flow rate of one carrier of an excessive flow rate is installed. Since the excessive flow rate of the carrier is suppressed with the carrier flow rate suppressing layer 16, the number of holes and that of electrons flowing into the light emitting layer 18 can easily be balanced. As a result, heat-generating amount caused by excessive carrier not used in recombination can be reduced, and deterioration of the organic EL element can be prevented.
