摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably align liquid crystalline molecules (in particular discotic liquid crystalline molecules) in an essentially vertical and uniform direction. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment layer, containing a modified polyvinyl alcohol which contains 2-80 mol.% of a recurring unit with two to four aromatic rings or aromatic heterocyclic rings in its side chain expressed by a formula, is used. In the formula, L1 is a connecting group selected from among a group comprising a single bond, -CO-, -CO-NH-, -alkylene group-, -CO-NH- alkylene group- or the like and -CO-NH-alkylene group-CO-NH-; L2, L3 and L4 are connecting groups mutually independently selected from among a group comprising a single bond, -O-, -CO-, -CO-NU-, -alkylene group-, -O-alkylene group- and-alkylene group -O- or the like; Ar1, Ar2, Ar3 and Ar4 are mutually independently aromatic rings or aromatic heterocyclic rings; and m and n are 0 or 1.
