PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a counter for paper sheets capable of reducing a noise at need even while dealing with the acceleration of the processing speed. SOLUTION: This counter for paper sheets 1 is provided with a rotational cylinder 3 rotatably supported by a suction pipe 2, a suction shaft 7 provided with the cylinder 3 and a vacuum pump 12 connected to the pipe 2, and a rotational cylinder driving motor 5 for driving the cylinder 3 and a vacuum pump driving motor 21 being the driving source of the pump 12 are driven and controlled by a controlling part 6. The part 6 is provided with an operating part 44 to which a selection operation is inputted, and the part 6 can control so that the motors 5 and 21 can be decelerated more than a normal speed in accordance with a selection operation inputted to the part 44. When count processing is desired to be performed under the situation in which silence is needed, count processing in which noise is reduced can be performed by selecting a driving mode by the part 44.
