PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a diameter of a lens without impairing a protection function of the lens and a characteristic of an optical system. SOLUTION: In this image reader, its one end is opened as an incident side of an optical image, and the other end is opened as an emitting side of the optical image, cut-out parts 9b recessed from the incident side of the optical image toward its emitting side are provided in an opening edge part of the incident side of the optical image and in both sides of a main scanning direction X, relating to a lens-barrel 9 for supporting an imaging lens including the first lens 101 inside the barrel 9, and the optical image in the main scanning direction X read by a reading means is made thereby to get incident into the first lens 101 from the cut-out parts 9b of the edge part in addition to an opening part 9a of the lens-barrel 9.
