<p>A process is provided for preserving skeletal muscle mass in a geriatric dog by feeding the dog a diet containing an effective amount of animal-based protein. Preferably, the diet includes greater than about 16 % by weight animal-based protein on a dry matter basis, and more preferably, from about 24 to 34 % by weight protein. Such a diet also provides sufficient protein to improve the body composition of the dog and reduce body fat.</p> |
