A tool serves for cleaning a bearing surface 24 of a pipe end 22, which is equipped with a radially projecting flange 23. The tool comprises a tubular housing 7; 13, which defines an axis and has a coupling 15 for detachably fitting the housing 7; 13 to the pipe end 22; a cutter 11 having a shank 3, which serves to support the cutter 11 so that it is axially displaceable in the housing 7; 13, and which is designed in a cleaning operation to absorb an external torque for turning the cutter 11; and a compression spring 10, fitted between the housing 7; 13 and the cutter, to keep the cutter 11 pressed down and in operative engagement with the bearing surface 24. The tool is well suited to removing old gaskets and cleaning bearing surfaces in pipelines with consumption meters, which must be replaced with new ones. <IMAGE>
