The module has a housing (22) containing a folded airbag (32), with part of the housing formed as a cover (34) projecting into the vehicle interior. The cover supports the knees of a passenger (40) during airbag inflation. The airbag is arranged so that it passes through an opening in the housing past the cover into the interior, when the cover is at least partially moved into the interior. The cover has stiffener elements, and is e.g. a pivoted flap, which moves through an angle of less than 45[deg]. The housing may be formed by the pivoted cover of a glove compartment.
