A cartridge picker 19 for selectively engaging and disengaging a cartridge 22 may comprise a thumb assembly 21 mounted to the cartridge picker 19 so that the thumb assembly 21 is moveable along a first displacement path 38 and 39 between an extended position and a retracted position. An automatically splaying picker finger 10 having an engagement end 49 and a mounting end 51 is mounted to the thumb assembly 21 at the mounting end 51 and is moveable between a retracted position 40 and a splayed position 42, so that the finger 10 moves into the splayed position 42 when the engagement end 49 is moved against a cartridge 22. A cartridge picker positioning system 34 is operatively associated with the cartridge picker 19 to move the cartridge picker 19 between a first position and a second position along a second displacement path 32 that is substantially perpendicular to the first displacement path 38 and 39.
