摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use even the pore surfaces in a catalyst and to efficiently remove metal impurities such as vanadium and nickel from heavy oil by preparing a hydrogenation demetallizing catalyst for heavy oil from silica having a controlled range of average pore diameter and containing no group 6 metals in the periodical table. SOLUTION: This hydrogenation demetallizing catalyst for heavy oil is prepared from silica having 150 to 1,000Åaverage pore diameter and containing no group 6 metals in the periodical table and containing at most 1 wt.% of other metals calculated as oxides. In the production of the silica-based catalyst, first a silica sol is dehydrated at a high temp. or dehydrated and condensed with addition of an acid or alkali to obtain gel. The gel is washed with water, formed and dried and calcined at 80 to 200 deg.C drying temp. for 0.5 to 10 hours of drying time and at 300 to 600 deg.C calcining temp. and 0.5 to 8 hours of calcining time to obtain a silica catalyst. During forming, a binder may be added, and in this case, the silica content is preferably controlled to >=50 wt.%.
