PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper conveying mechanism that transmits a rotation force using gear in a movable state, ensure accuracy of paper feeding by certainly preventing the skewing of paper and preventing rotation of a platen during separation and landing when an abutting member is also movable, and can keep an engagement state between a platen gear and a movable-side gear. SOLUTION: This paper conveying mechanism comprises a sun gear 82 for transmitting a rotation driving force, a planetary gear 84 that is connected with the sun gear 82 via an arm 96 and engages with the outer periphery of the sun gear 82, a platen gear 98 engaging with the planetary gear 84, a reading platen 86 rotating integrally with the platen gear 98, a CIS 90 that is provided integrally on the planetary gear 84 side, is capable of abutting to the reading platen 86 and of conveying document between it and the reading platen 86, and a spring 94 for energizing the CIS 90 to the reading platen 86 side. The driving force added from the planetary gear 84 to the reading platen 86 is directed to substantially same direction as that of a tangent B at a position A where the CIS 90 abuts to the reading platen 86.
