PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heating device and method for fuel gas, supplied air or mixture thereof of a premix compression self-ignition engine which unnecessitates or downsizes a heating device for premixture, and reduces energy to be supplied. SOLUTION: A heater device heats fuel gas, supplied air, or mixture thereof in an premix compression self-ignition engine which is driven by self-ignition of premixture G prepared by previously mixing fuel gas F with intake air A by a position of high compression ratio. In this case, an exhaust reflux device and an ignition agent injection device 26 are attached to the engine. An operation condition sensing device 18 senses the operation condition of the engine. A temperature sensor 16 senses the temperature of the premixture G. A total control device 28 receives the signals from the operation condition sensing device 18 and the temperature sensor 16, and controls the amounts of the ignition agent and circulated exhaust gas. The premixture is thus heated for improving self-ignition performance.
