PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject base material by admixing a gel formed with hyaluronic acid only that is slightly soluble in neutral aqueous solution where the base material has excellent safety and biocompatibility, because any crosslinking agent is not used and is useful as a construction material or the like for artificial organs, for example, artificial skin. SOLUTION: This cell culture base material includes the gel that is formed from only hyaluronic acid slightly soluble in a neutral aqueous solution. This gel has a dissolution rate of <=50% in 12 hours in a neutral aqueous solution at 37 deg.C and the gel is treated under the promoted hyaluronic acidhydrolyzing conditions whereby the solubilized hyaluronic acid has the branched molecular structure and the molecular weight fraction having the branching degree of >=0.5 in the solubilized hyaluronic acid. The resultant gel is, preferably in a sheet, film or crushed form. The gel is obtained by freezing the aqueous solution of <=3.5 pH followed by thawing.
