PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent any damage to a skirt or a valve boss of a valve lifter for an internal combustion engine caused by foreign matters and increase a reserve amount of a lubricant at the side surface of the skirt. SOLUTION: In a valve lifter 2 for an internal combustion engine for converting a rotational motion of a cam 3a into a reciprocating motion so as to transmit it to a valve stem 4, the surface roughness at the side surface of a skirt 2b abutting against the wall surface of a bore 1a of a lifter boss 1 is great at the center 2c along an axial direction of the valve stem 4 and small at an upper end 2d and a lower end 2e, so that the substantial contact area between the skirt 2b of the valve lifter 2 and the lifter boss 1 is reduced, thereby securely reserving a sufficient amount of a lubricant between the skirt 2b and the lifter boss 1.
