The system includes two units, the first transmitting power contactlessly to the second unit, both units having data transmitters and receivers. The drive circuit (18) for the power transmitter (20) is connected to an electronic control unit (26) for switching the power transfer frequency during transmission. An encoding/decoding circuit (50) is coupled to the power receiver to derive a clock from the power transmission frequency. A method of operating an identification system is also claimed.
