Mammalian hair growth is reduced by applying to the skin an inhibitor of protein-tyrosine kinase. A method is described for applying to the skin a composition including an inhibitor of protein-tyrosine kinases in an amount effective to reduce hair growth. The unwanted hair growth which is reduced m ay be normal hair growth, or hair growth that results from an abnormal or diseased condition. The preferred composition includes at least one inhibito r of protein-tyrosine kinase in a cosmetically and/or dermatologically acceptable vehicle. The composition may be a solid, semi-solid, or liquid. T he composition may be, for example, a cosmetic and dermatologic product in the form of an, for example, ointment, lotion, foam, cream, gel, or hydroalcohol ic solution. The composition may also be in the form of a shaving preparation o r an aftershave.
