The display device is mounted at the rear of the vehicle, e.g. in the vertical section of the luggage space lid and has 3 display characters, which can be adjusted for displaying the numbers 0 to 9 using an operating keyboard incorporated in the automobile dashboard, e.g. for indicating the maximum permitted velocity. An acoustic warning signal is provided within the automobile when the velocity indicated by the rear-mounted display is exceeded, with a display lamp illuminated at the rear of the vehicle, the selected display numbers indicated to the driver by a corresponding dashboard display.
