TREATMENT OF RADIOACTIVELY CONTAMINATED METALS

Radioactively contaminated metal objects are treated with an acid solution to cause dissolution of a surface layer of the objects. The pH of the solution is then raised with calcium hydroxide and a magnesium containing compound to cause dissolved metal to separate from the solution in solid form. Further treatment steps may include addition of sodium hydroxide and nickel hexacyanoferrate, polymer assisted settling of solids, UV oxidation, ion exchange and filtration.
