Malto-oligosaccharide derivatives represented by general formula (1); hydrates or physiologically acceptable salts thereof; and alpha -amylase inhibitors or preventive or therapeutic agents for hyperglycemia including diabetes, containing the same as the active ingredient: wherein n is an integer of 0 to 3; and X is hydrogen or a hydrophobic group.
