PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of document detecting sensors for reducing the cost by detecting the pass of a document through a plurality of paths for carrying documents by one detecting sensor for detecting the carried document. SOLUTION: When the tip of a document fed from a document placing tray 21 to a platen glass 1 through a feed path 27 shields the optical path of a sheet sensor 49, it is detected by the sensor. A pair of register rollers 30a, 30b starts to rotate, and the document length is detected according to the rotating quantity of the regist rollers 30a, 30b up to the time the document rear end passes through the sheet sensor 49. In double read mode, the document after single read is returned to a prescribed position by the reverse rotation of a carrying belt 31. A document G gets into a double face reverse path 50 and shields the optical path of the sheet sensor 49, whereby the document G is detected by the sensor 49, and stopped after carried by a prescribed quantity starting from this time.
