The system (20) shares data between the different facilities involved in the production of a newspaper or other periodical. The system also controls the timing of data exchanges to meet deadlines. All data is held in a central database (21) which is accessed by a central processing unit (22). The data generating and using stations include publishers (23), editors (24), correspondents (25), compositors (26), printers (27) and subscribers (28).
