The ball bearing coupler comprises a tubular male muff joint (2) with an outer annular step (4). A cage (6) for holding the balls (12) having slots (10) for receiving the balls is coaxially fixed onto a tubular sleeve (3). A socket (13) is mounted coaxially with the cage by guides (14,15) which rotationally guide the socket about the coupler longitudinal axis enabling an angular displacement ( alpha ) of the socket relative to the cage between first and second positions. The socket has a recess (16) for each ball extending opposite the corresponding slot for the socket first position to form a stop for the ball in a projecting position inside the cage. A second recess (17), connected to the first recess by an inclined wall (18), is offset to the first recess by an angle corresponding to the angular displacement for receiving the ball in a retracted position.
