A method for controlling traction of a vehicle wheel (16) on a surface(s) employs an engine speed sensor that exists on most modern vehicles. The invention compares, through a computer program, engine speed in a first time interval with engine speed in a second time interval to derive an engine acceleration factor. This factor is compared with an acceleration threshold that is established for the particular vehicle and surface conditions. If the factor is greater than the threshold, the program initiates a correction to control traction that is proportional to the degree to which the measured acceleration exceeds the threshold. The present invention applies also to mechanically driven rotating equipment.
|
