PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the driving method of a plasma display panel capable of enhancing the contrast with low power consumption even while suppressing spurious profile. SOLUTION: The display period of one field is divided into N pieces of subfields and a first pixel data pulse which generates discharge initializing all discharging cells into either state of light emitting cells or non-light emitting cells only in the subfield of the leading parts in subfield groups consisting of M pieces (2<=M<=N) of continuously arranged subfields among the divided subfields and generates discharge setting the discharging cells into either state of non-light emitting cells or light emitting cells in either of subfields among subfields in the subfield groups is impressed on a plasma display panel. Then, thereafter, only above described light emitting cells are made to emit light only for luminous periods made to correspond to weights of subfields in respective subfields by impressing a second pixel data pulse which is the same as the above described pixel data pulse in at least one subfield among existing subfields.
