PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately and certainly detect a surface flaw of a material to be inspected such as a long steel piece having an almost square cross section on the side surface or at the corner thereof. SOLUTION: The magnetic power apparatus 1 includes a trunk 2 running along the longitudinal direction of a long steel piece (a material to be inspected) S with an almost square cross section having a magnetic powder bonded to the surface thereof, a camera 12 arranged in the truck 2 and dividing each of at least a pair of the adjacent side surfaces (f, f) of the steel piece S into a plurality of blocks to take the image of the surface of each of the blocks, revolving mirrors 20, 28 and cameras 18, 26 arranged in the vicinity of the camera 12 to have ultraviolet lamps 10 irradiating the side surfaces (f) of the steel piece S and dividing the corner C between a pair of the side surfaces (f, f) of the steel piece S and/or either one of the corners C on both sides holding a pair of the side surfaces (f, f) into a plurality of blocks to take the images of the surfaces of the blocks, the ultraviolet lamps 16, 24 arranged in the vicinity of them to irradiate respective corners C, and a laser displacement (position) sensor 22 held in an oblique posture.
