PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium having a high S/N ratio although furnished with the narrows track in the case it is used for the magnetic recording system with the optical assist. SOLUTION: This medium is constituted in such a manner that the magnetic layer on the recorded part is locally heated by convergent light to execute the recording operation while applying the external magnetic field having the direction in accordance with the information, and the information is reproduced by means of detecting the magnetic flux generated from the recording magnetic domain. In this case, the width of the protruded track (land) formed between grooves on a substrate is arranged to be <=1/1.5 times the width of the convergent light in the vertical direction with respect to the track. Meanwhile, the width of the convergent light is the width in the range having the light intensity equal to or stronger than 1/e2 as compared with the peak intensity of the light.
