PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the temperature rise of a CCD sensor and also to avoid a case where the size of an image reader is increased or an adverse effect is given to an FCOT due to the suppression of the said temperature rise even when the size of an original is detected by the CCD sensor. SOLUTION: This image reader consists of a cover which covers an original platen in an freely opening/closing way, the open/close confirming means 9a and 9b which confirm the opening/closing of the cover, a reading means 6 which reads the image data from an original set on the original platen and a start control means 18 which starts the means 6 to make it to perform a reading operation after the means 9a and 9b confirmed the open state of the cover.
