PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject conjugate having a fixed molecular weight, safely and freely usable, useful for an oxygen carrier, etc., by bonding a polyoxyalkylene derivative and a nitrogen monoxide metabolite to a fixed position of hemoglobin. SOLUTION: This conjugate comprises a polyoxyalkylene derivative of formula I [B is a compound residue containing 2-6 hydroxyl groups; AO is a 3-4C oxyalkylene; R is a 1-30C hydrocarbon or a hydroxyl group; (k) and (m) are each 0-500; k+m is 20-1,000; (l) and (n) are each 0-10; l+n is 0-10; (a) is 0-6; (b) is 1-6; a+b is 2-6; X is a functional group of formula II ((c) is 0-2; and Y is H, p-nitrophenyl or the like;) or the like and bondable to an amino group] bonded to 10-30% the total number of bondable amino groups in hemoglobin and a nitrogen monoxide metabolite such as S-nitrosoglutathione, etc., bonded to 10-100% the total number of thiol groups of cysteine residue and has 100,000-2,000,000 dalton molecular weight. Preferably an oxygen carrier is prepared by making the carrier include 10-200 g/l of the conjugate.
