PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound comprising a pentacyclotetradecane derivative in which hydroxyl group rich in reactivity is introduced and useful as a functional polymer raw material or a biologically active compound. SOLUTION: This compound is 11,12- dihydroxypentacyclo-[6.6.0.02,6.03,13.010,14]tetradecene-4 represented by formula I. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting pentacyclotetradecadiene of formula II with an osmium compound (e.g. a compound of the formula K2OsO4) as an oxidizing agent in an inert solvent, e.g. mixed system solvent of water with t-butyl alcohol, preferably at 0-30 deg.C, usually for 0.5-48 hr.
