A propellant charge (5) comprises a circular tubular propellant material and a spiral of explosive material. The explosive spiral (20) is embedded in the propellant material (22) so that upon detonation it will deliver energy to the propellant material and form a combustion surface in it. Independent claims are also included for; (1) A method for initiating and controlling the combustion and deflagration rate for a propellant charge, by detonating a spiral of explosive embedded in the propellant material, and (2) The use of explosive in spiral form in a propellant charge in order to deliver energy to the propellant material and form a combustion surface in it.
