A material of a shadow mask for a color picture tube is characterized by consisting of a low carbon steel containing 0.02 to 0.5 wt% of Mn, by consisting of a low carbon steel containing 0.0001 to 0.08 wt% of C and 0.02 to 0.5 wt% of Mn, or by containing 0.05 wt% or less of S, 0.001 to 0.1 wt% of Al, 0.0001 to 0.015 wt% of N, 0.001 to 0.1 wt% of Cu, 0.001 to 0.1 wt% of Cr, and 0.001 to 0.1 wt% of Ni. A color picture tube is characterized by a shadow mask so fitted to a frame that a tension is imparted to the shadow mask in a vertical direction, or a tension is imparted to the shadow mask in both vertical and horizontal directions.
