At the press section of a papermaking machine, the flexible press blanket (12) of the shoe press unit (14) has a matching camber to the camber structure of the counter roller (16) at the press gap (S) where the web passes through. The counter roller (16) has a positive camber and the flexible press blanket (12) of the shoe press unit (14) has a complementary negative camber. The press blanket (12) has an open surface structure to give a consistent water retention over the whole web width. The sections of the cambered press blanket (12) which are not cylindrical have blind drillings and/or grooves of the same depth, or they have different depths at least partially. The shape, dimensions, pattern and/or distribution of the blind drillings or grooves are set to give a consistent water retention according to their various depths. The shoe press unit has a shoe press roller (14), and the flexible blanket is formed by the flexible press mantle (12).
