PURPOSE: An apparatus for and a method of controlling operation of escalator are provided to accomplish improvements enabling an emergency operation of elevator by controlling a motor to stay at a zero speed upon failure of brake. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a speed control unit(32) for generating a three-phase voltage command in accordance with a difference between a speed command and an actual speed obtained by a subtracter(31) and an actual current value of an induction motor(35), a pulse width modulation(PWM) inverter(34) for switching a direct current power inputted from a converter(33) in accordance with the three-phase voltage command and supplying an alternating current power to the induction motor(35), the induction motor(35) being actuated by the PWM inverter(34) so as to generate a power to operate a conveyor of escalator, a brake(36) for forcedly stopping the rotation of the induction motor(35), a rotary encoder(37) for outputting pulses corresponding to a rotational speed of the motor(35), and an operation control unit(38) for generating the speed command based on the pulse output from the encoder(37), an operation command to the brake(36) upon operation of a safety switch(39), and controlling the conveyor to be stopped when a motion is detected from the conveyor after an elapse of a predetermined time period since the generation of the operation command to the brake(36).
