Class 123(1) A consumable magnesium-base anode for use in the cathodic protection of structures such as ships, piers and pipelines consists in one form of a hemispherical anode block 10 in which is cast an angle-iron core 11 forming the anode support and the means by which it is electrically connected to the structure, an efficient and permanent connection between the core and block being provided by a secondary insert 13 of thin metal rod bent to U- shape and welded at its ends to the core. During solidifications of the anode metal, shrinkage which occurs around the heavysection core does not occur around the light-section insert 13 which becomes permanently bonded to the metal. In another form, Fig. 2, the anode block 10 has the smaller end of a corxcrete-filled, frusto-conical iron core 20 embedded therein. Four steel strips 22 are welded to the top of the core, opposite strips being connected by perforated strips 23, 24 forming the secondary inserts. The Provisional Specifications describe also anode assemblies in which the secondary inserts project from the anode block and are used as additional connectors between the block and the structure to be protected. |
