PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of flickers on a reproducing screen when the light emission cycle of illumination does not match with the image pickup cycle of an image pickup element. SOLUTION: Corresponding to a light source for emitting light in 1/100 sec cycle, the operation timing of the image pickup element for repeating an image pickup operation by 1/30 sec cycle is set at every three cycles. In a first period V1, the timing of frame transfer is quickened by 1/300 sec to the timing of vertical scanning. In a second period V2, the timing of the frame transfer is quickened by 2/300 sec. Thus, the first and second periods V1 and V2 match with the triple of the light emission cycle T1 of the illumination and a third period V3 matches with the quadruple of the light emission cycle T1 of the illumination. Since the light emission state of the illumination is uniformized in each of the periods V1-V3, in image signals obtained by the image pickup operation in the period, the dispersion of a level for each vertical scanning period is eliminated.
