PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a complicated shape information detailedly expressible and to make exactly and speedily retrievable multimedia data by comparing the feature of an outputted question video with the feature of a video in a multimedia database and outputting the compared result. SOLUTION: At the time of multimedia data retrieval, a feature extracting part 11 for the question video receives the shape information of the question video and extracts the feature of the shape information while using a shape information describer to use the peculiar vectors of multilayer covariant matrix, a feature extracting part 22 for video for multimedia database construction extracts the feature of respective video data similarly to the feature extracting part 11 and a multimedia data constructing part 33 constructs a multimedia database from these features. Then, a similarity comparing part 45 calculates the degree of similarity by comparing the feature of the question video outputted from the respective feature extracting parts 11 and 22 with the feature of the video in the multimedia database and this calculated result is outputted by a compared result output part 55.
