PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone set which causes a subscriber of a telephone set of the opposite side to recognize that the talk between both subscribers is discontinued due to deterioration of radio waves receiving electric field level from a base station, when the talk is discontinued. SOLUTION: A portable telephone set is provided with an operating section 10, having a button used for intermittently generating silence in audio signals, a memory 11 which stores at least one silence generating time and intermittent silent pattern, and a timer 12 which measures the silence generating time. The telephone set is also provided with a silence generating means 15, which intermittently generates silence in the voice signals and a control section 16 which controls each section. When the control section 16 detects that the button of the operating section 10 is depressed, the section 16 reads out the silence generating time and intermittent silent pattern from the memory 11, actuates the timer 12, and causes the silence generating means 15 to intermittently generate silence in the audio signals according to the intermittent silent pattern. When the timer 12 measures the silence generating time, the control section 16 controls for discontinuing the talk.
