A polymerization initiator for cationically polymerizable organic substances which comprises a crystalline ion-association substance having such a unique property that it can initiate not only photopolymerization but thermal polymerization when used in polymerizing a cationically polymerizable organic substance. The crystalline ion-association substance is represented by the general formula (I): [{C5(R<1>)n}2mMm]<l+>[{B(R<2>)4}<->]l.
