<p>A fiber amplifier has a structure capable of maintaining desired signal amplification characteristics even in an environment exposed to radiation. The fiber amplifier includes a bleaching system for fixing defects that may occur in the fiberglass exposed to ultraviolet rays. The bleaching system subjects the optical fiber to either optical or thermal bleaching. The optical bleaching is carried out using light that has a lower wavelength and greater power than exciting radiation. The structure of the fiber amplifier is capable of introducing and removing such bleaching light. The thermal bleaching is carried out by heating the optical fiber. The structure of the fiber amplifier is capable of maintaining the temperature of the surface of the optical fiber within a predetermined range.</p> |
