The invention relates to a chain element for a conveyor chain, especially for a mat conveyor chain, comprising a support plate (2) which is provided with several gudgeons (5) on both of its longitudinal edges (4) which are oriented crosswise to the running direction. Said gudgeons are located adjacently to each other and at a distance from each other and have bores (8) for receiving a hinge pin (20), said bores being flush with each other. The gudgeons (5) of one longitudinal edge (4.1) are offset from the gudgeons (5) of the other longitudinal edge (4.2). At least one gudgeon that is allocated to a side edge (6) of the support plate (2) respectively is provided with a cross bore (9), this cross bore running crosswise to and intersecting the hinge pin bore (8) and a pin-shaped locking element (7) being located in said cross bore.
