PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thermosetting material which does not melt or drip during burning and has improved flame retardancy by compounding a thermosetting material with a (di)pbosphonate and a specified synergistic component. SOLUTION: A thermosetting material (100 pts.wt.) is compounded with 5-30 pts.wt. at least one flame retardant selected from among a phosphonate of formula I, a diphosphonate of formula II, and polymers thereof and 10-100 pts.wt. synergistic component selected from among a metal hydroxide, a nitrogen compound, and a phosphorus-nitrogen compound. In the formulae, R1s and R2s are linear or branched 1-6C alkyls and/or aryls; R3 is a linear or branched 1-10C alkylene, a 6-10C arylene, an alkylarylene or an arylalkylene; M is Mg, Ca, Al, Sb, Sn, Ge, Ti, Zn, Fe, Zr, Ce, Bi, Sr, Mn, Li, Na, and/or K; and m, n, and x are each 1-4.
