PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid from phenylacetic acid. SOLUTION: Phenylacetic acid is treated with a culture solution of a fungus which is derived from Rhizoctonia oryzae and produces an enzyme capable of being treated with phenylacetic acid and speaificall hydroxylating the para- position of phenylacetic acid, its microbial cell or a treated material of the microbial cell to give p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid.
