PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display unit with backlight reduced in power consumption by transducing the light of the light source of the backlight into electric power, and making use of the electric power for the circuit part in the display unit. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display unit 10 is provided with solar cell modules 28 on the back of a light source cover 24 formed in the upper part of the backlight 14, and has such configuration as the electric power transduced by the solar cell modules 28 is supplied to an electric circuit. In such a manner, since a part of the light irradiated from a fluorescent tube 26 is converted into the electric power by solar cell modules 28 and further supplied to the electric circuit, the electric power necessary for the electric circuit operation is supplemented, and the power consumption falls.
